Research Opportunities in Cardiff
Research Associate Posts
These are for ST 5-7 anaesthetists and intensivists. Post holders are required to do their full on-call duties but all other committments are to research. Post holders will have an honorary contract with Cardiff University and will be expected to deliver one undergraduate teaching session per month. Placement in these research associate posts is dependent on agreement with the Welsh School and satisfactory progress through appropriate training modules. Posts are for 6 months in the first instance extendable to 12 months by mutual agreement after suitable appraisal.
- Obstetric Anaesthesia. Post holders will be required to have done 3 months higher training in obstetrics before taking up this post.
- Pre-hospital medicine. Post holders are required to spend one day a week working with the Welsh Ambulance service, travelling to and assisting with emergencies.
- Paediatric Anaesthesia. Post holders are required to do 3 months higher training in paediatric anaesthesia before or after taking up this post. Post holders are also encouraged to do a 3 month module in PICU
- Airway Anaesthesia
- Cardiovascular Anaesthesia. Areas of research include post-operative cognitive dysfunction and novel assays for haemostasis. Post holders are required to be flexible during their research time and compile a log book of TOE experience gained by working with trainers in cardiothoracic theatres.
- Neuroanaesthesia. Post holders will be working in our CUBRIC brain imaging centre.
Lecturer posts
There are two lecturer posts. Holders are required to fulfil the standard on-call duties and will have two days a week for undergraduate teaching. These are one year posts but if staff are unable to fill them for a year then shorter duration contracts are available. If basic undergraduate teaching for the School of Medicine has been delivered there are opportunities for Simulation Education within the academic department. In addition post holders are required to assist in on-going simple studies (largely bench studies) in order that they may produce publications and presentations at the end of their post. This is a basic additional requirement of these posts.
Doctorate Lecturer Posts
Five doctorate lecturer posts are available designed to enable post holders to acquire PhDs.They are advertised nationally. These posts offer a 3 or 4 year PhD, during this time post holders will do one night on-call a week and one all-day list a fortnight in order to maintain clinical skills. Post doctorate trainees will work one day a week in the academic department while completing the clinical requirements to obtain their CCT. These posts offer research opportunities in areas supported by the School of Medicine's Interdisciplinary Research Groups:
- Sepsis research: both bench and clinical research
- Mechanisms of Sedation: investigations using advanced neuroimaging techniques
- Development of novel assays of haemostasis
- Anaesthetics and engineering : including novel imaging techniques for the airway.
These posts offer training in both laboratory-based and clinical research. All doctorates are joint-supervised by both a clinical and a basic science academic.
