If you do not have anaesthesia or intensive care in your foundation programme it may be hard to imagine a career in these specialties. It is therefore wothwhile experiencing them as a taster session during your foundation year. You may use your study leave in a block of up to a week at a time to attend the anaesthetic department in your hospital.
During your taster week you will be under the supervision of a named consultant anaesthetist who will find out your specific needs and interests for the week and will try to accommodate them. As well as giving you valuable insights into whether this is the career for you it is very useful for your portfolio when applying for core training posts in demonstrating motivation and commitment to the specialty.
It is important to be organised and arrange this early in your first F2 post as you need to apply fairly early for Core Training posts. Don't worry about the service needs of your F2 post as an impediment to trying out a taster as this is something than can be managed if you liaise with your Foundation Programme Director in good time. You are entitled to this taster session and there are lots of people who can help you arrange it.
