Training Overview
Progression through the anaesthetic training programme (from August 2010) requires demonstration of clinical competence in a range of clinical units of training. Training is divided into 8 BASIS units and 15 BASIC units. Competence in knowledge, skills and demonstration of good attitude and behaviour are assessed.
The BASIS units must be completed in the first 3-6 months of training. There are mandatory assessments, 6xDOPS, 5xAnaes-CEX and 8xCBD's, which are mapped against these units and comprise the Initial Assessment of Competence (see IAC mapping below).
Trainees cannot work without direct supervision until this is successfully achieved. Once IAC is achieved trainees can begin the BASIC units of training. Sign-off of these units requires 1xDOP, 1x Anaes-CEX and 1xCBD per unit together with logbook and any other evidence leading to a successful Core Clinical Learning Outcome.
These units are not necessarily delivered in module form, except for a mandatory 3-month ICM module. An obstetric module is also desirable. There is an Obstetric Assessment of Competence, similar in format to the IAC, which must be completed before trainees can work unsupervised in obstetrics. One MSF per year is also mandatory.
When all units are successfully completed and the trainee has passed the Primary FRCA, the Basic Level Training Certficate (BLT) is awarded allowing career progression to the Specialty Training Programme.
ARCP's
Towards the end of each year of Core Training you will have an ARCP (Annual Review of Competence Progression). You will be required to submit a portfolio which includes a range of documentary evidence that you have had satisfactory assessments during the preceeding year. A log book and CV are also required. It is much better to plan for this from Day 1, not Day 364.
Primary Exam
Further information to follow shortly.
Study Days
