SpR Training Scheme

Competency based training and assessment

The competency based training (CBT) system that you experienced in your SHO years is still the basis of this next phase of your training. In the first two SpR years there are 13 mandatory units of training that you must complete and have signed-off before you can progress to year 3. The contents of each unit of training are detailed in the training manual in the CBT section of the website. Further details can also be found in the CCT III document under the "training" section of the College website (www.rcoa.ac.uk). It is essential that you talk to your local tutor at the earliest opportunity so that you can plan the units you will cover in each part of your rotation.

RITAs

Towards the end of each year of SpR training you will have a RITA (Record of In-service Training Assessment) interview. You will be required to bring a portfolio which includes an up to date logbook and your CV. It is much better to plan for this from Day 1, not Day 364. Full details about the RITA process can be found opposite.

Final FRCA exam

In addition to a completed set of units of training and satisfactory RITA interviews, progression to year 3 also requires the small matter of the final FRCA exam. It is always better to plan your first sitting, such that there will be time for any (obviously highly unlikely) re-sits. The syllabus consists of the contents of all of the units of training listed in the CCT III document mentioned above. You should discuss your plans with your tutor.

Study Days

There are two SpR study days targeted at different stages of your training. Further details can be Study Day's pages of the website . Please make every effort to attend (book early with the Specialty Training Manager - bassettl@cardiff.ac.uk).
