Provided you complete your 5 years of SpR training successfully, fill in some forms and pay your fees, you will be awarded with a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) and your name will be placed on the specialist register held by the GMC. This will enable you to work as a consultant within the NHS.
The award was previously called the Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training or CCST. The statutory body that now awards the certificate has changed which is the reason for the change in name. The awarding body since October 2005 is the Postgraduate Medical Education and Training Board (PMETB). There is no practical difference between the certificates and they are equivalent in all ways.
As you approach the end of your training you will be invited to attend your final RITA. This will take place within 3 months of your expected CCT date. If this is satisfactory you will be awarded a RITA G (successful final RITA) form. You will also be asked to fill in a Royal College 'Notification of Forthcoming Completion of Training' form. The Programme Director will then send these forms to the appropriate bodies.
Upon receiving these forms, the Royal College will write to the PMETB recommending that they award you a CCT in Anaesthetics. In addition to awarding a CCT, the PMETB will also provide you with details of how to apply to the General Medical Council (GMC) to have your name placed on the specialist register. You will need to proceed with this as it is a legal requirement to be on the specialist register before taking up a substantive NHS consultant post.
This may sound complicated but in reality is straightforward and fortunately, you do not have to initiate any of the above. All the necessary forms will be sent to you in good time for you to fill in and send back together with the appropriate fees as necessary.
