Paediatrics

Following a higher training module in paediatrics, trainees may apply for a post as a research associate in paediatric anaesthesia. These posts are for 6 months extendable to a year. Trainees time will be split between clinical work and research. There is also the opportunity to do a 3 month module in paediatric intensive care, trainees with an interest in paediatrics are strongly encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity. If further experience in paediatric anaesthesia is desired it may be possible to arrange a secondment to Bristol for experience in paediatric cardiac anaesthesia.

Aims of advanced paediatric training:

  • To consolidate on experience already obtained; the special areas of paediatric care provided make trainees aware of the exceptional needs of some children and of the demands met in providing support for the other members of the families of the very sick, and, sometimes, dying children.
  • To gain experience in the preparation of parents and children for surgery, and in the pre-operative assessment of children.
  • To gain experience of pre-medication, management of "difficult" children, induction techniques, local and post-operative analgesia (including opiate infusions, PCAs in children and special local analgesic techniques).
  • To gain experience in major paediatric surgery, including problems like blood replacement, fluid balance, post-operative monitoring and multi-system suppor
  • To gain experience in the principles of neonatal anaesthesia.
  • To learn the anaesthetic management of children with renal failure.
