Chronic Pain

Advanced training in chronic pain is organized on a subregional basis, with Wales being divided into 3 areas: Within South East Wales training occurs in Cardiff, Newport and Abergavenny The training programme in South East Wales for advanced trainees in chronic pain gives experience and exposure to many aspects of pain management. The trainee will have the opportunity to participate in anaesthetic-run clinics and treatment sessions in addition to exposure to an outpatient and inpatient pain management programme, psychology, During their advanced training the trainee will be expected to attend the following clinical attachments:
  • Rheumatology
  • Palliative care ward
  • Palliative care medical clinic
  • Liaison psychiatry clinic
  • Psychology - individual sessions
  • Physiotherapy - individual sessions
  • Outpatient pain management programme - follow one cohort of patients
  • Neurosurgery list (implantation)
  • Radiotherapy marking up session
The inpatient pain management programme is based in Bronllys hospital and the trainee will have the opportunity to attend a 3 week block to observe and participate in the pain management programme. In addition the trainee will be able to participate in assessment clinics at other times.
