Induction Days

The Welsh School of Anaesthesia holds an Annual Introduction to Higher & Advanced Training Day, usually in July following the ST4 ARCP date. The content of the day includes all higher level training requirements, plus an opportunity to find out more about all the advanced training options within the School. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all the lecture material has now been made available via panopto and outlines the requirements for higher training and options for advanced training. Training Overview

The aim of training in ST5,6 & 7 is to produce trainees competent for independent professional practice in their chosen consultant career. Professional practice means more than the performance of clinical skills, no matter how complex. It very importantly carries an inbuilt commitment to standards, and the attitudes which will maintain those standards throughout life.
During ST5,6 & 7 trainees will undertake two years of higher training and one year of advanced training.

The Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes required for Higher Training are set out in Annex D of the Curriculum of the Royal College of Anaesthetists. There is a requirement to complete 4 essential specialist modules and 9 out of a possible 14 essential general modules, of which 3 are mandatory.

Essential Specialist Modules:

• Cardiacthoracic Anaesthesia and Cardiac Intensive Care
  
• Intensive Care Medicine (Annex F)
  
• Neuroanaesthesia, Neuroradiology and Neuro Intensive Care
  
• Paediatric Anaesthesia (completed in Cardiff)
  

Essential General Duties, the following 3 modules are mandatory:

• Airway management
  
• Management of Respiratory & Cardiac Arrest
  
• Perioperative Medicine - applies to ALL ST5 entrants from August 2016
  

Plus a further 6 essential modules must be completed:

• Day Surgery
  
• General Surgery / Gynaecology / Urology (+/- Transplantation)
  
• Head & Neck, MaxFax & Dental
  
• Non theatre
  
• Obstetric Anaesthesia
  
• Orthopaedic Anaesthesia
  
• Regional Anaesthesia
  
• Sedation
  
• Transfer Medicine
  
• Trauma and Stabilisation
  
• Vascular
  

There are further optional higher units of training:

• Pain Management
  
• Paediatric Intensive Care Medicine
  
• Plastics & Burns
  
• Anaesthesia for the developing world
  
• Conscious sedation in dentistry
  
• Military anaesthesia
  
• Remote & rural anaesthesia
  

Assessments

For a unit of training to be signed off there must be evidence of attainment of each of the Core Clinical Learning Outcomes listed for that module in the Curriculum, with supporting workplace based assessments, logbook numbers and Consultant feedback. FICM and the RCoA have revised the competencies required for a higher ICM unit of training sign-off, please see Annex F for the updated competencies and workplace based assessment tools.

ARCPs

ARCPs will continue at the end of each year of higher level training and you will be sent information well in advance of the date(s) detailing what evidence you must provide. ARCP dates can be found on ARCP webpage. The checklists on the school website are updated every 4-6 months please make sure you are following the correct list.
