HEIW All Wales Study Leave Policy

The Welsh School are currently updating their study leave supportive information material as a useful FAQs document for all residents and trainers to refer to. This will be available in April 2026.

School FAQs on Study leave requests

The Study leave FAQs document is designed to support decision making and developing a consistent approach across Wales for residents. The FAQs document is not an exhaustive list and there will continue to be individual discussions between residents, college tutors and the School. The document also references the all Wales study leave guidance which is nationally agreed guidance for all residents.

Guidance on additional work undertaken whilst working in a postgraduate training programme

COPMED have published guidance detailing the considerations for residents wishing to undertake additional work/locums whilst in a postgraduate training programme. The guidance refers to both full time and LTFT residents and is also a useful reference for trainers in educational supervisor roles and in managing rota queries.

Educational supervisors should be encouraged to discuss with the resident any additional activity as part of their ongoing review of training progression and curriculum requirements prior to ARCP review.
