Trainees Return To Training
Returning to clinical anaesthesia following a period of absence e.g. maternity leave, prolonged sick leave or out-of-programme research/experience can be particularly stressful. The School has supported the development of a number of measures to make the process as seamless and supportive as possible. It is essential that trainees meet with their ES prior to embarking on a prolonged period of leave to discuss plans for staying in touch.
Areas to discuss include:
- Use of KIT days
- Attending a 'Return to Work' study day
- Setting a target date for meeting the designated return to work advisor
- Completing educational checklist

Return to Training Peer Mentoring
We have a new peer mentoring initiative developed by trainees in the Welsh School of Anaesthesia to help those returning to training following a period of time out. This scheme offers a free and confidential space to talk through any issues/worries with other trainees who have had time out of training for many reasons and completed a return to training. The aim of this is to make the transition back to training as seamless and anxiety-free as possible.
We currently have a number for stage 2 and 3 trainees who have completed mentorship training from the Professional Support Unit.
If you are starting/currently on a period of prolonged leave or have recently returned to training and feel having a peer mentor would be useful, please contact Jess Phillips (stage 2 trainee and scheme lead), via jessicaphillips23@doctors.org.uk for more information.
